How Long Should a Flag Last?

The U.S. Government generally expects a nylon or cotton flag to last approximately 90 days, based on daily usage from sunrise to sunset. Tests have shown that in some cases a flag flown 24 hours a day will last only 1/4 as long as one flown during daylight hours only.

How to Extend the Life of a Flag:

  • Clean your flag regularly. Smoke, dust and other airborne contaminants “set” in the fabric. Outdoor flags can be hand washed with warm water and a mild soap, then rinsed thoroughly and spread to dry.

  • Consider having two flags and rotating them on a regular basis. Tests have shown that flag fibers benefit from periodic “rest”. Also, you will not be without a flag while one is being cleaned or repaired.

Which Material Should I Choose?

Nylon:

  • Lightweight
  • Quick drying
  • Treated to resist fading
  • Good for moderate weather conditions
  • Ideal for residential or indoor displays

Polyester:

  • Heavier material
  • Durable
  • Resistant to fraying & tearing
  • Ideal for long-term outdoor use, high-wind locations & commercial use
